There is a long history of inequality, oppression and even violence towards LGBTQ+ people. Today, there are policies and legislation designed to give people equal opportunities irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity. However, the reality is that LGBTQ+ people still face discrimination and exclusion in the workplace and wider society.
Most people don’t intend to be disrespectful or discriminate. They perhaps don’t fully understand the diverse representations of sex, gender and sexual orientation, and don’t realise the impact their words and actions can have. But by becoming more aware of the correct terminology, and learning how to be respectful, we can help break down stigmas, prejudices and biases. It also allows us to build more equal, diverse and inclusive workplaces, where everyone feels safe and empowered.
This Gender and Sexuality Awareness course covers the challenges that LGBTQ+ people face in the workplace and society, and the benefits individuals and organisations can gain from building a diverse and inclusive work environment. It describes the differences between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation.
You will learn how to respond appropriately and respectfully if someone comes out to you, as well as what to do if you unintentionally say or do something disrespectful. The course also outlines what you should do if you or someone else are being disrespected, bullied, harassed or discriminated against at work.
This course is not intended to assign labels to LGBTQ+ people but rather it aims to build awareness around LGBTQ+ language to help everyone be more respectful and inclusive. The list of terms included is not exhaustive or definitive. People might have their own variations of these definitions, and language and definitions are constantly evolving as our understanding of gender and sexual orientation grows.
Our Gender and Sexuality online course covers:
- Challenges LGBTQ+ people face in the workplace and society.
- Gender and sexual orientation terminology.
- What you can do to promote respect and inclusion for LGBTQ+ people in the workplace.
